Caravaggio- Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was born 29 September 1571 and died 18 July 1610. He was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily. His style involved realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting. He combined close physical observation with a dramatic, even theatrical, use of chiaroscuro that had a formative influence on the Baroque movement. Famous while he lived for both his skill in painting and his dangerous life, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered.
Rembrant- Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born 15 July 1606 and died 4 October 1669. He was a Dutch painter and etcher and is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art and the most important in Dutch history. He became most famous in the Dutch Golden Age during the time the Baroque style dominated Europe. During his life he produced nearly 300 painting, 300 etchings and 2,000 drawings.
Vermeer- Johannas Vermeer was born in 1632 and died December 1675. He was a Dutch painter and is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work. His work shows and understanding of light and reflections of color, the surface of every object in his paintings has reflections of the color of the adjacent object. In this way, he painted a world more perfect than he witnessed.
Rubens- Sir Peter Paul Rubens was born 28 June 1577 Siegen, Germany and died 30 May 1640 in Antwerp Belgium. He had a promantant and extravagant Baroque style that emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality. He is well known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. Rubens was also a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England.
